The Strength of Others

This Thursday afternoon, and every day, we express our deep gratitude to the donors, volunteers, and staff who support the mission of St. Vincent Meals on Wheels. Our goal is to prepare and deliver food and love to homebound and hungry seniors across Los Angeles County. This mission is fulfilled not in isolation but through the contributions of dedicated volunteers like Tyan. Her weekly meal deliveries provide much more than nutrition; they offer empathy and understanding, creating genuine human connections. Simple, familiar gestures often uncover unmet needs, highlighting the isolation many face. These seemingly small acts of service bridge gaps of loneliness and foster unexpected bonds.

One of Tyan’s memorable encounters involved a senior eagerly “waiting for us”—a touching reflection on solitude. Through such interactions, Tyan discovered that by uplifting others, she was uplifted in return, exemplifying the beautiful balance of giving and receiving.

Her experiences resonate with the wisdom of the poem “The Strength of Others” by the late Father Bill Atkinson, O.S.A. Despite being paralyzed from the neck down after an accident during his novitiate, Father Bill dedicated more than 30 years to serving as a priest and high school teacher—a life enriched by interconnectedness and support.

In Father Bill’s words:

“How’d I do it? Let me reply
On those who help me, I totally relied
They taught me to live, not just to cope
With their love, they gave me hope
How’d I do it? Day after day
Help of others along the way
Valued friends, sisters, and brothers
I simply borrowed – the strength of others”

At St. Vincent Meals on Wheels, we embody these principles, relying on each other and uniting in our mission. Today, we remind ourselves—and each other—of our collective spirit as we continue to go #BeyondtheMeal in service to seniors and other vulnerable community members. We are grateful for the support and strength we borrow and share each day. This is how we thrive.
