Summer Instant Hydration Program

St. Vincent Meals on Wheels Summer Instant Hydration Program (SIHP): Safeguarding the Health and Well-Being of our Clients as the Weather Heats Up

The St. Vincent Meals on Wheels Summer Instant Hydration Program (SIHP) was developed to address the critical need for clean drinking water among our homebound clients during the hot summer months. Originally initiated in response to client requests for water bottles, the program has since expanded to encompass the distribution of Brita® filters to ensure consistent access to clean water.

Key statistics from the program include the distribution of 60 Brita filters to participants, with half of them managing three or more chronic health conditions that require regular hydration. Additionally, a quarter of SIHP participants lack access to clean drinking water, relying solely on beverages provided by SVMOW such as milk and juice. The introduction of Brita® filters has proven vital, particularly for clients without suitable kitchen facilities, ensuring them access clean water.

Positive feedback from participants underscores the program’s impact on improved hydration and overall health. One client notes the program’s assistance in supporting their medication regimen, emphasizing the convenience and financial relief provided by the Brita® filters. It is crucial to note that dehydration poses significant risks, especially for older adults, highlighting the importance of staying hydrated to enhance cognitive function, support cell regeneration, regulate blood glucose levels, aid in digestion and immunity, and mitigate the risk of heat-related illnesses.

In conclusion, SIHP serves as a vital resource in promoting hydration among vulnerable individuals, with the provision of Brita filters playing a crucial role in safeguarding their health and well-being during the summer months.
