Meet Irene
She has graced the stages of the world’s most renowned opera houses, from the famed Dome in Cologne, Germany to the Met here at home. She sang for many of the greatest composers such as Vladimir Horowitz in Europe and Leonard Bernstein in New York.
St. Vincent Meals on Wheels client Irene Nicolai’s young life was spent perfecting her skill as an opera singer and traveling around the globe appearing as a guest artist, singing Wagner, Verdi and Mahler.
Today, Irene finds solace and gratitude in the simple joys of receiving nutritious meals from St. Vincent Meals on Wheels. The warmth and care of the staff and volunteers have touched her heart, making her feel blessed to have their support in her life.
From her flower-filled garden in Los Angeles, Irene reflects on her experiences, sharing stories of challenges and triumphs alongside legends like Bernstein, whom she described as a “perfectionist and a genius,” being as hard on himself as he was on the artists who sang for him.
Irene traces her connection to SVMOW back to her mother’s time, emphasizing the enduring thread of love and care woven by Sister Alice Marie and her team of angels. “My mother, who lived in this house before me received meals from Sister Alice Marie, and now, many years later, I rely on the same dear souls to visit me each day who show me so much kindness.”
In acknowledging the impact of kindness, care, food, and love, Irene shines a light on St. Vincent Meals on Wheels and how the goodness and generosity of its staff and volunteers, makes an unmistakable impact on clients like her who find not just sustenance but also a lifeline that nourishes their spirits and helps them thrive each day.
