Courage and Dedication During Challenging Times

“The ultimate measure of a man is not where he stands in moments of comfort and convenience, but where he stands at times of challenge and controversy.” Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr

These powerful words from Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. resonate deeply with us as we face the recent challenges in Los Angeles. Tens of thousands of Angelenos have been driven from their homes with sometimes only the clothes on their backs. Many sought shelter with family and friends, and many have tragically lost their homes to the fires.

In these difficult times, the courage and dedication shown by our team and supporters at St. Vincent Meals on Wheels have been truly inspiring. Because of their relentless efforts, we have continued to provide our essential services, ensuring that meals have reached our homebound seniors throughout the week.

A recent segment on National Public Radio highlighted the vulnerability of older Angelenos, especially in light of last week’s wildfires. At St. Vincent Meals on Wheels, we draw inspiration from the legacy of our founder, Sister Alice Marie, who was guided by the Vincentian values that acts of charity surpass any rule or pious exercise, urging us to see all of humanity in the faces of the poor and needy.

With this spirit, we remain committed to our mission of serving the homebound and hungry and stand united with the community, offering the support and care that everyone deserves during this trying time. Indeed, our true measure is reflected in how we uphold our values and care for the most vulnerable among us during challenging times like these.
