Combating Food Insecurity
“No more shall your lands be desolate.” Isaiah 62:4
St. Vincent Meals on Wheels plays a vital role in supporting our clients, many of whom face health challenges that affect their ability to perform daily tasks, such as meal preparation. With the population of people over 65 rising each year, a significant portion of those with dementia and other health issues in Los Angeles are living at home and unable to prepare food independently. This underscores the importance of programs like St. Vincent Meals on Wheels. Our work helps combat food insecurity and ensures that those with dementia and other mental and physical challenges maintain their health through proper nutrition.
Our staff and volunteer delivery drivers often serve as critical sources of social interaction for homebound clients. These interactions go #BeyondTheMeal by providing brief but essential wellness checks. Delivery drivers and meal runners act as an “extra set of eyes,” ensuring the safety and well-being of recipients by verifying that doors are answered and meals are delivered.
However, maintaining these crucial services requires ongoing support. Programs like St. Vincent Meals on Wheels rely primarily on private donations and community fundraising efforts, highlighting the need to amplify awareness and strengthen advocacy to sustain and expand our essential services.
As the number of people living with dementia is projected to increase significantly, supporting organizations that provide both nutritious meals and human connection is paramount. St. Vincent Meals on Wheels is committed to providing meals and nurturing a community of care and support where our vulnerable neighbors in Los Angeles can thrive.
